Unlocking Success at Solar Conferences
A Step-by-Step Guide
Could your next solar conference spark a life-changing partnership, career breakthrough or the launch of your next big idea?
This isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s exactly what happened to me. Let me share how one conference changed the trajectory of my career:
In October 2021, I had the opportunity to speak at the Solar Mastermind conference in Dallas, Texas. It wasn’t a massive event, but it was a defining moment for me—it was my first time addressing an audience made up entirely of solar pros. Sharing my insights and learning from others was an incredible experience. But what really stood out was meeting people I’d only known from social media.
Seeing familiar faces in person was a game-changer. It felt like a mix of a family reunion and meeting old friends for the first time. Social media connects us, but nothing compares to shaking someone’s hand, sharing a laugh and having genuine, face-to-face conversations. Those moments stick with you and leave a lasting impact.
It’s those real, in-the-moment interactions where ideas are born, partnerships are formed and doors open in unexpected ways.
That smaller event also helped me see the bigger picture. Sponsors, speakers and attendees opened my eyes to new opportunities and sparked ideas I hadn’t considered before. While I was gaining insights at that conference, my future co-founders were having their own ‘aha’ moments at another conference, RoofCon in Orlando.
When we eventually connected, everything clicked and our vision of creating an event to scale connections and collaborations on a national stage came to life.
That vision was SolarCon, which now brings together thousands of professionals each year.
But here’s the truth: any conference can be the catalyst for something big—yet many people never attend because of the fear of the unknown.

Looking back, as someone who’s naturally an introvert, I completely understand the hesitation that comes with going to conferences. It can feel intimidating, even overwhelming, to walk into a room full of strangers and try to network.
There were times I questioned if I even belonged there. But what I’ve learned is that stepping into that discomfort is where the real growth happens.
Getting comfortable being uncomfortable isn’t just a cliché—it’s a skill that builds confidence and opens doors you never knew existed. That nervousness you feel? It’s a sign you’re about to grow stronger. And every time I pushed past it, I discovered connections and opportunities that shaped my career.
Just like my experience, conferences are full of opportunities to meet new people, share ideas and grow professionally. But making the most of those opportunities requires more than just showing up—you need a plan.
How to Make the Most of Your Next Conference
Whether you’re attending or exhibiting, having a solid game plan can transform a good event into a life-changing one. Here’s how to maximize every opportunity:
For Attendees
Our Intention Creates Our Reality
Before the event, ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? Whether it’s building relationships, learning new strategies or discovering innovative products and services, having clear goals will help you stay focused and make better use of your time. Review the agenda in advance and prioritize key speakers or sessions that interest you.
Build a Powerful Network
Conferences are goldmines for networking. Introduce yourself to peers, sponsors and speakers. Don’t just exchange business cards—have meaningful conversations. Ask questions like, “What’s been your biggest challenge in the industry?” or “What are you working on that excites you right now?” These can lead to deeper connections. If networking feels intimidating, start by meeting sponsors or try attending structured networking events—these are great places to build confidence and begin those meaningful connections
Get Around
Once you've made some initial connections, it's time to explore the expo floor and discover what exhibitors have to offer. Sponsors aren’t just there to push products—they’re there to share value. Learn how their offerings could enhance your business and don’t shy away from asking questions. Plus, picking up some swag doesn’t hurt!
Do It For The Content
Use the event as a backdrop for creating social media content. Take photos, shoot videos and share insights from the sessions you attend. Live-streaming, collaborating and tagging other creators and the conference itself can spark engagement online. Sharing your insights on social media can amplify your takeaways, engage your network and establish you as a thought leader in your industry. One strategy I use is conducting impromptu interviews with familiar faces from social media—it’s a great way to create engaging content, build your brand and foster deeper connections. If you’re nervous about starting the conversation, start by asking someone about their favorite session of the day and capture their reaction. To elevate your content, invest in wireless microphone sets for your phone for better audio quality—it makes a huge difference!
Solidify Connections
Take time for casual, spontaneous conversations—they often lead to the most meaningful connections. Whether at an after party or after the conference, stay connected with the people you meet. A quick email or LinkedIn message can go a long way in solidifying those connections.

For Exhibitors
Early Bird Catches The Worm
Securing a great location on the expo floor is crucial. High-traffic areas give you more visibility. Many conferences reward early sign-ups with prime locations and discounts—another reason to act fast. Secure spots near entrances, stages or areas where attendees naturally congregate, like snack stations or other attractions.
Stand Out to Draw Them In
Your booth should draw attendees in. Think interactive games, special guests, swag giveaways, treats or eye-catching designs. Consider a photo booth with branded props or a contest that drives foot traffic. Think outside the box to make your booth stand out. Consider offering a workshop or a hands-on demonstration to educate attendees on how your products solve real industry problems. Once people are there, be approachable and friendly—your energy will set the tone for meaningful conversations.
Engage or Be Overlooked
Avoid the biggest mistake exhibitors make: sitting behind the booth glued to their phones. Stay approachable by standing, making eye contact and greeting attendees with a smile. Have an elevator pitch ready, but don’t make it all about selling—start with casual conversations to build rapport.
Stop, Collaborate and Listen
Take time to visit other exhibitors. Learning about their offerings can inspire partnerships or collaborations. Solar conferences are known for sparking alliances, so stay open to possibilities.
FU Money
Collect contact information and connect promptly after the conference. Share resources, schedule meetings and continue the conversations you started at the event. Consider using digital tools, like CRM’s or contact apps, to quickly capture attendee information and follow up with tailored messaging.

Why Conferences Are Worth It
Conferences require time, money and effort, but the rewards often far outweigh the costs. Whether it’s discovering a breakthrough strategy, forming a powerful partnership or finding fresh inspiration, the opportunities are limitless.
For example, one connection I made at that very first conference led to a pivotal partnership with our top sponsor, a relationship that has lasted to this day. That’s the power of showing up.
SolarCon itself was born from the connections made at conferences, and now, as we prepare for SolarCon 4, in mid-April 2025 at the brand-new Caesars Forum in Las Vegas, we’re on the cusp of shaping the future of the solar industry.
Conferences are more than just events—they are gateways to new possibilities. With intention and preparation, each one is an opportunity to unlock something life-changing.
